Maureen McCroskie’s journey is a testament to her diverse talents and unwavering commitment. Born in Irvine and educated at Saint Michael’s Academy Kilwinning, Endsleigh College, and Strathclyde University, her life has been a tapestry of sportsmanship, education, music, and service to her community.

Her passion for sports ran deep, excelling in hockey, netball, badminton, and volleyball at county level. Maureen’s crowning achievement was representing Scotland in both netball and volleyball, a privilege that speaks to her dedication and skill.

In her professional life, Maureen’s teaching career spanned both primary and secondary schools. Later, she focused on working with school refusers and children facing behavioural challenges. In her spare time, she generously volunteered with adult literacy programs, helping individuals learn to read and write. Maureen also shared her enthusiasm for fitness by instructing various adult keep-fit classes.

Music flowed through Maureen’s veins, nurtured from an early age in her musically inclined family. Singing became a family tradition, and Maureen lent her vocal talents to several bands over the years. In 1981, her musical journey took a significant turn when she auditioned for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Chorus. For an impressive 42 years, Maureen has been a vital part of the chorus, performing major classical works on global stages, from Oban to Melbourne, Jerusalem to Hong Kong.

Beyond her professional and musical pursuits, Maureen’s heart led her to be a part of positive change. She played an instrumental role in establishing the charity ‘Recovery Ayr,’ where she served on the Management Committee and Board of Trustees. This organisation was dedicated to helping people of all ages recover from addictions, reflecting Maureen’s commitment to community well-being.

As a testament to her love for Scotland’s cultural heritage, Maureen has had the privilege of attending numerous Burns Suppers at the Bachelors’ Club in Tarbolton. There, she not only enjoyed the festivities but also graced the audience with her beautiful singing, making each event a memorable celebration of Robert Burns’ legacy.
