Philip Long is a prominent figure in Scotland’s cultural and conservation landscape, currently serving as the Chief Executive of the The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), the country’s largest conservation organisation. The NTS is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage, ensuring its preservation for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

Before assuming his current role, Philip Long made significant contributions to Scotland’s cultural scene as the founding director of V&A Dundee. In 2011, he was appointed to lead the development of this groundbreaking cultural institution, overseeing all aspects from initial planning to the successful opening of the museum in September 2018.

Under his leadership, V&A Dundee became the first design museum in Scotland and the world’s first V&A museum outside of London. The collaborative efforts of the museum staff and founding partners, including Dundee City Council, the University of Dundee, Abertay University, and Scottish Enterprise, resulted in critical acclaim and international recognition. Notably, V&A Dundee was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 greatest places of 2019,” and within 500 days of opening, it welcomed its one millionth visitor. The museum’s impact extended beyond cultural appreciation, making a significant economic contribution to Scotland, amounting to £75 million in the first 12 months after its inauguration.

Before his tenure at V&A Dundee, Philip Long served as the Senior Curator at the National Galleries of Scotland, where he specialised in historic and contemporary Scottish and British art and design. During this time, he curated numerous exhibitions and made significant contributions to academic literature on the subject.

Philip Long’s expertise in the field has extended beyond Scotland’s borders. He has been involved in various international projects, such as curating Scotland’s presentation at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and leading the UK’s presentation at the Milan Design Triennale in 2016. Additionally, he has provided invaluable guidance to museums and government agencies on the establishment and development of new cultural and heritage organisations.

In recognition of his achievements and contributions to culture and heritage, Philip Long has been honoured with several prestigious titles and awards. He holds the title of Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee and is an Honorary Research Fellow at St Andrews University. Philip also serves as a Board member of Creative Scotland and is a member of the British Council’s Arts and Creative Economy Committee. Moreover, his esteemed position as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh further highlights his significant impact in the cultural realm. In 2019, Philip Long received a unique award for “Transforming Scotland” from the Institute of Directors, affirming his role in driving positive change in the country. His remarkable contributions were further recognised in 2020 when he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in the New Year’s Honours List for his exceptional services to Culture and Heritage.

Philip Long’s influence and expertise extend beyond accolades and official roles. He has shared his insights and knowledge as a guest speaker at exclusive events, including The Bachelors’ Club’s annual Burns Supper in January 2023, leaving a lasting impression on those who have had the privilege of hearing him speak.
