Hugh MacDonald - Lord of the Isles Ferry, Scotland

Hugh MacDonald has been welded to Glasgow all his life, both personally and professionally. Brought up in Possil and St George’s Road, Hugh decamped with his family in the early 1960s to Busby on the outskirts of the city. A journalist since 1972, Hugh spent most of that time at the then Glasgow Herald, where he was variously chief sub-editor, literary editor and chief sports writer.

His ultimate conversion to Burns came on the road to Kennacraig. Hugh had studied the Bard as a schoolboy and commissioned and compiled articles on him when he was a literary editor.

But a deepening appreciation of Burns came when he accompanied his father’s body on the road to Islay, crossing at Kennacraig. It was on this journey that he became involved in conversations about Burns with Bobby McCroskie, of Tarbolton Bachelors’ Club, who was driving the hearse. These sparked a renewed and passionate interest in Burns that continues to this day.
